Blessing of Easter Food

Fr. Patrick will bless Easter food baskets on Holy Saturday (Apr. 20) at 12 noon in the gathering space of the North Church.

The tradition of food blessing at Easter has early-medieval roots in Christian society. Baskets containing a sampling of Easter foods are brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The foods in the baskets have a symbolic meaning: eggs – symbolize life and Christ’s resurrection; bread – symbolic of Jesus; lamb – represents Christ; salt – represents purification; horseradish – symbolic of the bitter sacrifice of Christ; and ham – symbolic of great joy and abundance.

Easter Vigil

The Easter Vigil Mass will be held at 8:30 p.m. at the North Church. This Mass is the first official celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. The Mass begins with the Easter fire being lit outdoors welcoming the light of Christ. New members are received into the Catholic Church. We hope you’ll join us for worship as we celebrate Christ’s glorious rising.

This continues the Easter Triduum, which extends from Holy Thursday evening to the evening of Easter Sunday.

(Note: There is no late afternoon Mass on Holy Saturday.)
