Music Trivia – Polyphony

Question: Which Catholic Church council almost banned polyphony and which musical composer saved it and how?

Answer: The Council of Trent was set to ban polyphony. At the time, music composers had been making the compositions so complex that the sung word was completely unintelligible. The composer Giovanni Palestrina wrote a Mass setting called the Missa Papae Marcelli or Pope Marcellus Mass to prove that polyphony could be done in a way that maintains the integrity of the word and elevates the liturgy.
