Question: Why do we still sing the Epiphany Proclamation? Isn’t it outdated and obsolete in a world with calendars, smart phones and Google?
Answer: The Epiphany Proclamation was originally largely to inform people of the dates of the important liturgical feasts. However, it has a second, and arguably more important, role as well. That is to stress the centrality of the Resurrection of the Lord in the liturgical year and the importance of the larger liturgical feasts in the year. In a world where life flows at a fast pace and families” schedules are inundated with the rush of daily life, it is important to take a few moments to remember the importance of certain dates in the liturgical year so that when we come to them during the year, we prioritize them on our calendars, whether that is a paper calendar or a digital calendar.
