Rachel Weeping Dedication

July 18, 2012

The dedication of the “Rachel Weeping for Her Children” statue was held July 18 at 6 p.m. at the South Church. The sculpture is based on Jeremiah 31:15-16 – “Rachel mourns her children; she refuses to be consoled, because her children are no more.” Across her lap is an empty blanket that would have cradled her child. While the sculpture is a memorial to all the innocent souls hurt by and lost to abortion, it also speaks to all those who have lost children, allowing people to experience God’s mercy and healing. Milwaukee Bishop Donald Hying presided and Fr. Tom Eichenberger and Fr. Yamid Blanco vested for the important occasion. Following the Benediction, all processed outside, where Bishop Hying, surrounded by a Knights of Columbus Honor Guard, blessed the statue. The sculptor, Sondra Jonson, also attended, and presented Bishop Hying with a picture of the statue.
